Preparing for Transfer Course Registration – Readmits
1. Become familiar with major requirements
Upon entering UIC, you may already have an idea of which major you wish to pursue, or may want to explore what options you have with UIC Business. Read more about each of our majors.
UIC Business Requirements
All students must complete University Writing, Foreign Language, and Mathematics requirements. Placement tests should be taken in each of these areas before attending Orientation so that you are able to enroll in the courses you need to ensure a timely graduation.

English Course Determination
Placement in English courses is determined by an evaluation of the student’s College Essay and the student’s standardized score on the College Composition Skills Test.
- Students who place into English 160 must register for English 160.
- Students who place into English 071 are in need of English Composition skills improvement and are required to register for English 071.
- Students who have ACT- English sub-score of 27 or higher are not required to take the placement exam for English. These students will receive 3 hours of credit for English 160 and should enroll in English 161.
- Students whose College Essays indicate that they are in need of an “English as a Second Language” course will be required to enroll in either ESL 050, 060 or ENGL 070. The Department of English will make this determination.
Grades of C or better are required in English 160 and 161. These courses should be completed by the end of the freshman year.
Foreign Language Requirement
The College of Business Administration requires two years of a single foreign language (with minimum grades of C) at the high school level, one year of the single foreign language at the college level, or approved proficiency in a foreign language. If you are deficient in this category, you will be required to take two semesters of a single foreign language at the college level (earning minimum grades of C) at UIC or elsewhere. The hours earned will not count toward the degree requirements.
If you want to begin or continue the study of a foreign language, you must take the placement exam for that language. Credit may be applied to the elective category if it is not considered duplication of high school credit.
Note: You will not receive credit for course taken in your native language. Proficiency credit for any foreign language will not be counted toward the degree. If you are a native speaker of another language, please meet with your Adviser during your first semester of attendance at UIC, as you may be exempt from this requirement.

Math Course Determination
Business students must register for a mathematics course each semester until the required courses are completed. Grades of C or better are required in Math courses. After completing the required mathematics sequence, students must enroll in IDS 270. Some students may be required to take prerequisite math courses prior to enrolling in the required math courses, due to their placement score. Credit earned for these prerequisite courses will not count toward the hours required for graduation and the grades earned are not included in the grade point average (GPA). Students required to take prerequisite math courses may place anywhere in this sequence: Math 088/090090110 165 and 180. Satisfactory grades are required in MATH 088/090, 090 and 110 to progress to the next math course.
General Education Requirements
All students must fulfill the General Education requirements in order to graduate. General Education courses include the following categories: Analyzing the Natural World, Exploring World Cultures, Understanding the Creative Arts, Understanding the Individual and Society, Understanding the Past, and Understanding U.S. Society. Familiarize yourself with the General Education requirements by looking in the Undergraduate Catalog.
2. Check your placement test results
After you have completed your placement testing, you can access your test results, obtain information on how to interpret the results, and learn how to prepare for your first semester at UIC through UIC Connect. You will find planning for your first semester to be much easier if you review this information prior to your appointment.
To check placement test results, go to my.UIC.edu, and log in by clicking on “login” under Existing Portal Users. Click on the UIC Connect tab, then, click on “View Available Testing Results” in the Placement Testing portlet on the Pathway to Enrollment Tab. Once you have this information, you may begin planning your course schedule your advising appointment.
3. Check your degree audit to view your transfer credit and progress towards your degree
A Degree Audit is an individualized report showing all of your classes and your progress toward meeting graduation requirements.
How to access your Degree Audit:
- Log into my.UIC.edu
- Select “Student” tab
- Select “Degree Audit”
- Select “Request Audit”
- Choose the audit you want to run
- “Run Declared Programs” will reflect your currently declared major.
- Select “Run Declared Programs”
OR - If you do not have a declared major or want to see the requirements for another major, choose “Select a Different Program,” and enter the information in the drop-down menus
- Select “Run Different Program”
- On the next page, wait a few seconds (up to thirty) and an audit will appear. Select the “View Audit” button when it appears. You may need to click on “Update” to load the audit before opening it.
Toward the end of your Degree Audit, you will find a section titled “All Courses.” This section shows every course that UIC has record of you completing or for which you are currently enrolled (these courses show as “IP”, meaning they are in-progress). If, at the very end of your Degree Audit, there is a section titled “Courses to be Reviewed” with courses listed underneath, it means UIC Business has not yet reviewed, or is in the process of reviewing, the course(s) for credit toward your degree. An adviser will discuss this with you at Orientation.
If you have taken courses that are not showing in this section of your Degree Audit, that may mean either the transcript has not yet been sent to UIC (and needs to be), or it has been sent to UIC but has not yet been processed by the Admissions Office (processing can take 2-3 weeks once the transcript has been received by the Admissions Office). Please send final transcripts as quickly as possible following the completion of courses taken somewhere other than UIC, as that will help ensure a smooth registration and advising experience.
You will thoroughly review your degree audit at your advising appointment. Please bring any questions you have regarding your Degree Audit with you to your advising appointment.
4. Review course options
While the courses you take to complete the University Writing and Mathematics requirements may be dictated by your placement test results, choice of major, and/or educational goal, you have many choices when it comes to your General Education courses. Take a look at the General Education section of the Undergraduate Catalog , which lists General Education requirements and courses. Choose two or three courses from each category that interest you: Analyzing the Natural World, Exploring World Cultures, Understanding the Creative Arts, Understanding the Individual and Society, Understanding the Past, and Understanding U.S. Society.
General Education courses include the following categories: Analyzing the Natural World, Exploring World Cultures, Understanding the Creative Arts, Understanding the Individual and Society, Understanding the Past, and Understanding U.S. Society. Once you have found a couple of courses from each category that sound interesting, check the Course Descriptions for prerequisites (courses you must take first in order to be properly prepared). Most courses designed for first-year students will be at the 100 level such as: SOC 100, POLS 101, THTR 109, and HIST 103.
Not all courses will be offered or open every semester. To see what is available in a particular semester, go to Course Descriptions , select Schedule of Classes, and, then, select Schedule of Classes Search to look for a particular department or course. To search for all General Education courses that fit a certain category, start from the Schedule of Classes page. Then, under the New General Education Sections, select New General Education Dynamic Search Feature.
5. Consider the number of credit hours you will take
- A semester hour is the university’s unit of academic credit. Typical courses are three credit hours. Many science or math courses are four or five credit hours because they include a discussion or lab component.
- A minimum of 120 credit hours, which apply to the degree requirements, are needed for graduation.
- UIC requires that you complete 60 credit hours at a 4-year institution. Therefore, if you have taken more than 60 hours of community college work prior to attending UIC that are applying toward your degree, you still have a minimum of 60 left after arrival.
- In order to be a full-time student, you must register for at least 12 credit hours in the fall semester and 12 credit hours in the spring semester. If you take fewer than 12 credit hours in either the fall or spring semester, you will be considered a part-time student. We do not recommend registering for more than 15 or 16 credit hours in your first semester at UIC.
6. Register for classes
Now that you have prepared, please register for classes as soon as you are able to do so. You do not have to wait until speaking with an academic adviser to register for classes. At your appointment, you will meet with a UIC Business academic adviser who will review the courses for which you have registered and will make suggestions if changes are needed.
To register, follow these step-by-step instructions
